New Jack in the Box Logo: Is It Any Good?

By Jim Edwards | Mar 5, 2009

Burger chain Jack in the Box has redesigned its logo. The old one was a simple red box with a blobby, 1970s-style typeface. The new one, in two tones of red that give a 3D feel, screams “I have been professionally redesigned!” It was created by Duffy & Partners.

The move comes during a comic campaign in which chain icon Jack has been in an advertising-induced coma after being hit by a bus on Super Bowl Sunday. Jack recently emerged from his stupor to strangle a would-be successor, Phil. The ad was created by Secret Weapon.

I’m in two minds. Whenever a classic brand that has nothing wrong with it is “refreshed” by an agency I immediately feel nostalgia for the old marque. Consistency has value. (It used to be how you build a brand, remember that?)

The new logo isn’t overtly offensive, although it feels more like a video game than a burger joint to me. One last thought: Won’t those two tones of red get lost down the line under cheaper printing methods (i.e. letterhead, franchisee flyers, etc.)?

Use the comments section below (you must register first). You tell me which logo is best.

Side note: Is there something wrong with Jack in the Box’s media buying agency? TV spots for this client are running in the New York media market but the nearest Jack in the box is in North Carolina. Waste of money!

I'm enjoying one of the recent Northwest items donated to the Delta Archives.  This issue of Northwest's employee magazine was all about the airline's new 1969 logo, "a new look for the fast-paced 1970's." Reading the magazine, I found out a red, white and blue version of the logo was seriously considered.  Also, the stylized red tail in a...

The old logo does seem better, I have seen too many smoothed over clean Apple imitations in the market. Change the typeface, make it more legible. If you want to stand out in a crowd, why have the same logo feel as every other Tom,Dick and Harry.

For me, incremental changes to logos are better. Maybe keep the old block (possibly making the block more 3-D) and update the typeface without losing the consistency.

Aside from that, I'm not crazy about the logo. It looks like someone learned how to use the 3-D function of PhotoShop, and it artificially separates "Jack" and "in the box." Mentally, it takes me from a "jack-in-the-box" (the pop-up toy) to "Jack, who is in the box."

Since society now seems to have a pathological need to shorten everything from restaurants (California Pizza Kitchen=KPC) to couples (TomKat, Brangelina, ugh), they're probably hoping to shorten it to "just Jack" (with apologies to Will & Grace). At least it's not JIB or something.

There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the old logo. True, the joined-up capitals with rounded edges were a little hard to read and, when reproduced, looked amateurish. But that could have been fixed by any moderately competent in-house graphics department.

RE: New Jack in the Box Logo: Is It Any Good?

Without knowing too much about the chain and where
it's going, it's hard to comment other than just what it
looks like. It appears as though they are trying for a
more upscale look with a retro throw back. I don't
know if this is right for the brand. The old logo was
iconic for sure, the new is nice looking, however, I
don't think the typeface below matches the icon very
well, and believe the client will be tired of looking at
that typeface within the year. I like the comment above
about incremental changes or if you're going to go
wholesale change, include some familiar elements -
they have a mascot that is very recognizable too, they
probably explored that though. Bottomline: I like the
icon, not the text, but don't know if it fits the brand, I
    hope so.

I think they should use both, using the old 2D logo on the sides of the new 3D Jack in the Box logo and I think the new logo is missing a crank handle like a real Jack in the Box toy.
How do you make it go POP?

RE: New Jack in the Box Logo: Is It Any Good?

i see JACK in the right half of the box. a nice vignette of the iconic jack, which appeals to the smart people that enjoy the advertising. kudos to SECRET WEAPON for their amazing creativity....with cows the size of schnauzers but their cattle for the mini burgers now on sale is brilliant. as a comic i think schnauzer is so funny! i use the breed often in conversation to make people laugh. i assumed from the superbowl accident that jack would reappear as a different value of some sort, not the plastic bubblehead. many years ago the brand was to become monterey jack's and leave the funny behind in lieu of yuppified fare. thank God they stayed the course. jack's is hitting the value meal right, the burger trade right and the trendy drink/shake/smoothie just right.
i think their Secret Weapon is just that!
