The 10 Weirdest Ad Stories of the Month

By Jim Edwards | May 1, 2009

It’s the end of another month, and so we bring you the top 10 weirdest ad stories of April 2009. Enjoy!

  1. Worst ad ever? Toilet paper promo features model of human butt
Denmark’s Silk Soft is the brand that commissioned this monstrosity (pictured).
  2. JWT interns whipped and beaten
Or at least their T shirts — featuring faux sweat stains and whip slashes — make them appear that way.
  3. Eli Lilly hires “utterly reviled” Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler as spokesman
He’s supposed to be speaking about diabetes for the drug company, but apparently he’s disliked in Denver. And he drinks a lot.
  4. Woody Allen sues American Apparel over use of his face in an ad
The retailer used a shot of the director dressed as a Hasidic Jew — hat, locks and all.
  5. Ken Convoy of Missing Chopsticks goes off on agency new business execs
In a lengthy blog rant, Convoy dissects the “semi-psychotic” responses of executives at Aegis/Carat, BBDO, Campbell-Ewald, Enfatico, Grey, Leo Burnett and Y&R, who all declined to meet with him. Can’t think why.
  6. Audi v. BMW dealer billboard war
Audi was asking for it; BMW finished the job. Click to enlarge.
  7. Is JWT chief Bob Jeffries the worst blogger on Huffington Post?
He’s only written seven items since 2007. Useless!
  8. Body Snake: The long sponge for people too fat to clean themselves
Direct response ad on YouTube will make you want to skip lunch.
  9. Saatchi gallery and Clear Channel Outdoor use billboards to take art to the masses
Not everyone is happy about it — dealers and their 50 percent commissions are cut out of the loop.
  10. Adult incontinence advertising war heats up
Oh goody, Kimberly-Clark and TENA will be talking more frankly about bladder control. Can’t wait.
