Mad Men Spawns Don Draper Action Doll, Bobbleheads

By Jim Edwards | Nov 23, 2009

DraftFCB has created a Don Draper doll to promote Mad Men’s third season in New Zealand. The copy on the toy’s box is wonderful. It says:

See him drink, pitch & philander!

Collect all 4 mistresses!

The doll itself is a generic male mannequin that looks nothing like the chiseled, mostly useless hero of Sterling Cooper. Here’s how the doll came about:

We (DraftFCB) were tasked with promoting the third season of Mad Men here in New Zealand. We’re huge fan(atic)s, but the show is chronically low rated here. One of the things we decided to do, since Don’s pretty Ken doll anyway, is we’d make some Don Draper dolls to send out to people.

His suit is hand-stitched from real cloth, we designed and built a wood-panelled box for him to sit in. They were prohibitively expensive to make and we ran out of budget pretty quick, but totally worth it.

It’s the second Draper doll to come into existence. Check out the Don and Joan bobblehead dolls on Nerve.com. They’re both holding cigarettes, and Joan is grasping a martini as well.

Bonus points: We’re late on this, but if you haven’t seen it yet it’s worth a look. McCann Erickson New York took the mostly negative mentions of its agency in the season finale and compiled them into a (still mostly negative) highlight reel.

Is that another reason to support agencies imbecility?
