The Great Climate Change Scandal of 2009

By Chris Morrison | Nov 21, 2009

Drama is unfolding as the weekend begins, with the revelation that the University of East Anglia’s well-respected Climate Research Unit had its servers hacked and almost a decade’s worth of email revealed to the public. Hidden away among thousands of boring, everyday messages are a few dozen that don’t look good for the CRU, including references to using a “trick”...

By Kirsten Korosec | Nov 20, 2009

Valero Energy will permanently close its Delaware City refinery as shrinking margins and weak demand continue to punish the largest U.S. refiner. About 550 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the plant closure. “The decision to permanently close the Delaware City refinery was a very difficult one,” Valero Chairman and CEO Bill Klesse said in a statement Friday. Valero...

PG&E Smart Meter Case is Just the Beginning

By Chris Morrison | Nov 20, 2009

It’s great to be the first adopter of a hot new technology. That is, until you start using it and become the guinea pig for any unexpected problems that pop up. That’s where Pacific Gas & Electric is right now with its ongoing smart grid rollout, which hopes to eventually hook up millions of consumers in northern California to new meters that can communicate with the utility. A...

The Technologies for a Nuclear Resurgence

By Chris Morrison | Nov 19, 2009

James Lovelock, a prominent British scientist, wrote in 2004 that “civilization is in imminent danger and has to use nuclear”. Lindsey Graham, the breakaway Republican senator who advocated carbon controls, is pushing hard for nuclear power. Wherever one looks, there’s new support and excitement for nuclear plants. But using what technology? Nuclear science atrophied in the...

Miasole Finally Begins Shipping as Next Generation Solar Gets Investment

By Chris Morrison | Nov 18, 2009

Those who have been paying attention to thin-film solar panels for a few years will remember Miasole, one of a small group of companies that popped around 2006 with claims of super low-priced solar cells. They were the CIGS thin-film companies, and they — the other two big stories being Heliovolt and Nanosolar — were all too ready to spout big promises, saying they’d be...

Exxon Mobil has been batted about as a possible candidate to buy up Devon’s assets. China — with its growing appetite for energy — has shown interest in investing Gulf of Mexico assets and may go after some of...

By Kirsten Korosec | Nov 17, 2009

Peak oil — that much-debated moment when the world can no longer produce the oil and gas it needs and wants — is decades away, according to a recent study by IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates. Global oil production will grow from about 92 million barrels a day to around 115 million barrels per day through 2030 with no evidence of a peak in supply before that time,...

Week in Oil & Gas: Punting in Copenhagen and Gulf of Mexico Leases -- Abridged

By Kirsten Korosec | Nov 16, 2009

The odds Congress would be able to pass climate-change legislation this year dimmed by the minute last week, as the political wrangling moved to the Senate Finance Committee and the debate focused once again on jobs and the economy. The bill’s molasses-like progress through the Senate has rippled through the international community and has effectively crushed chances of reaching a...

Week in Renewables: Changes Afoot, Solar Growth, Electric Cars and Nukes

By Chris Morrison | Nov 15, 2009

The International Energy Agency may not have ever stirred up as much attention as it received this week for its latest World Energy Outlook, a yearly report that attempts a snapshot of the sprawling energy industry — at least partly because of accusations from former staffers that the IEA has been lying about energy reserves for years. Honest or not, the IEA is rapidly changing its tune...
