Glenn Beck More Popular Than Ever Despite Boycott

By Katherine Glover | Sep 17, 2009

The Glenn Beck Program now likely earns less in advertising than it costs to produce, according to my colleague Jim Edwards at BNET Advertising, who’s been providing diligent coverage of the growing boycott against the Fox News Channel talk show host.

It started when Beck called President Barack Obama a racist with a “deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” Procter & Gamble was one of the first companies to pulls its ads in response, followed by dozens of others, including Wal-Mart, ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft, Dannon, Sargento and Applebee’s.

The total number of companies now disassociating themselves with Beck is close to 60, but Fox is still getting the money. The companies are simply requesting that Fox not air their ads during that particular show.

Meanwhile the controversy has garnered even more attention for Beck, who is inflammatory to the point of seeming unstable. Since his initial boycott-inspiring Obama comments, he has joked about killing members of congress and compared Americorps to the SS.

Well, now I know of some businesses to shun:

Glenn Beck tells the truth in a funny way. Obama does see the world in terms of skin color. His Supreme court nominee does the same. That is typically called prejudice, or racism.

If you are going to op.ed. than at least admit your perspective is that... YOUR perspective. How on earth did she get allowed to post on BNET?

I support a restoration of Fairness rules to broadcasting and cable. That would put us on the road back to balance and save us from the increasing extremism that, if unchecked, will rip the nation apart. The internet and print are different animals. Easy access by ideologues and small-time kooks will continue to be the case, but such media are scattershot in reach compared to broadcasting and cable, which are more centralized. Stars come from radio and TV. Internet pontificators tend to mimic what their favorite stars say.

This only demonstates the duplicity of Political Correctness. Glenn's propositions are in line with many common view of the American public on current national political issues which are central to protecting the American values, Constitution, and Bill of Rights; especially when he presents supporting facts and evidence! This is far more than the smear tactics, fallacious arguments, and outright lies that we get from Washington and the liberal press!

These companies certainly have a right to take the action that they have, surely they will live with the consequences of their decisions. Many however will find the actions despicable, cowardly, and un-American in the long term and will take their business elsewhere.

Rather than "jumping on the bandwagon" of the attempts to destroy free enterprise, our national economy, and way of life by the current Obama administration; one might think that they would listen closely and critically to what Glenn has to say on the salient issues that we face and not fall to the PC nonsence being spued in the liberal media.

The ratings of the once prime time news organizations are plumeting toward Fox's balanced approach and will continue as long as Big Government continues to throw its weight against those that they are supposed to be serving. Just listen before you do something stupid like acting to support deviant, immoral, and un-American hogwash.

You (adviterizer companies), are adding to the problems that we face, grow up, listen, hear, and act responsibly; responsible performance is, I'm sure, what grew you to generated your market share in the first place. Are you dumb enough to think that you current action will promote more growth and prosperity? Think again, and do what is right and rational!

I truly believe that Obama is the Chief Engineer on the Socialist Express, and I personally hate everything he stands for, but Glenn Beck's over-the-top, self-serving sensationalism only serves to lose credibility to convince the moderate majority of the problems we face with this Administration and Congress, as well as alienate some conservative supporters. He further jeopardizes future arguments against Obama and an aristocratic left-winged Congress. Glen Beck may be our idiot, but that makes him no less of an idiot.

I agree with Carter. I also think we have national GIGO. Right wing stars feed the fears of the LCD and inspire the badly worded and badly spelled talking points that you see above, and which will follow in typical ugly stream after this comment. It's all predictable, just like Limbaugh's after-the-fact predictions are entirely predictable for those who understand psychology.

By the way, the Olbermanns and Maddows are just round 2 of the same unchecked unsanity. Bringing up the left wing contingent, they get their paychecks on dissing whatever the other guys said in the latest 24 hour cycle. They just aren't as hateful and obnoxious - yet. Inside fact: the extremist broadcasters on both sides absolutely depend on one another and are having a field day on our angst and fears.

Fairness is the only American way out of this hell.

Until the "Mainstream Media" starts to conduct the some in-depth discovery and digging around at what the current administration and "czars", and Presidential Appointees, and ACORN, and Socialist-minded Congressmen are DOING behind their smiles and false assurances, we're all being bambooseled.
Glenn at least speaks up and puts pressure on the administration to adjust. If not for Beck - Immigration Reform (whatever that means) would already be passed, ObamaCare would have passed, and Global Warming would somehow become a "fact" when in reality it's more of a cycle.
So, where is the Media that was so Loud and Obnoxious that questioned EVERYTHING Pres. Bush did? Why is it okay for the liberals to question, but the conservatives to be silent? Why are the largest companies in America "silent" on these issues that will effect everyone and so little support for less extreme solutions to problems that don't really exist except in the minds of a few "well intentioned" soap boxers?
If you want to talk about fair and balanced, it would be nice to see more true journalism and less personal opinion. Journalism is on life support in America. Personalities and Special Interest Marketing is taking over.

Nope. Fairness is neutral. It is not government beating you down. Fairness is best practices in the information biz. It encourages direct debate on issues of public importance, contrary to the claims of its detractors, and it provides remedies for personal attacks. Personal attacks and projection are techniques employed daily by right wing propagandists, because they have little of substance to talk about. The drama sells. So what? In the current situation, dissent is shut down. Opposing callers get the dump button and a dose of derision by the host. Remaining content is commentary on sound bites, which is debate removed. This one-winged bird does not fly in a free nation.

The left wing can certainly try the same attack and projection techniques, but why up the temp and bring the whole country down into the mud pit?

The better objective for the country is to promote rational debate on issues of public importance and fewer attacks, so we have a better informed and less fearful population.

RE: Glenn Beck More Popular Than Ever Despite Boycott

Galileo has successfully diverted the argument from the original one, which was the accuracy of Ms. Glover's article.

Galileo would like to say that the arena of debate is merely a mud pit, that freedom of speech needs to controlled by somebody other than it's participants. The Constitution specifically states that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. The Founders foresaw that "high-minded" individuals with the "I am God" syndrome believing that they are smarter than the rest of us would insist that they must be put in control, so they the Founders "wrote in stone" the rules of the game. Liberty will will always be a dirty business; for us it was once a bloody business, lest we forget. Arguments must be evaluated in terms of the truth, not in terms of fairness. Cowards would wish to whitewash unsavory debate, whereas Freemen and Lovers of Liberty would allow the firehose of Freedom to be wielded amidst the fray, that the truth might come clean to seen by the honest in heart.

Will Ms. Glover never be held to account for the accuracy - the illogic of her conclusions cast into doubt the accuracy of her "facts" - of her journalism? Will the opininations of those on the left continually be lost battles for us because we are consistently diverted by Galileos into false battles that are destined to degenerate into mere name calling? Honest journalists will recant - it happens all the time - when they are questioned and shown to be in error in their facts or their reasoning. The war for Liberty will be won when the hearts of more Americans are turned to love Liberty. We lose when we forget that every literary battle is an opportunity to win our opponent to our side. The love of Liberty must always be projected into love of our fellowman, that is, a passion for their freedom too. Else, how does love of Liberty spread? In this aspect of our strategy we must be unified.

    "LIKELY Earns Less in Advertising"

First sentence in Glover's wishful-thinking article did it for me.

Here's an excerpt from an 8/5/09 story:

The FOX News Channel (FNC) operating income, as compared to the prior year, increased 50% for both the fourth quarter and the full year, primarily from increased affiliate revenues. For the full year, FNC primetime ratings were up 45% compared with the same period a year ago.

And Fox News continues on a ratings tear this week. On Monday night and again last night, FNC beat the combined prime time averages, in both Total Viewers & A25-54 viewers, of MSNBC and CNN.

In fact last night, "The O'Reilly Factor" (on cable TV) averaged 3.67 million Total Viewers at 8pmET topping the 8pm average of 2.91M on ABC (on broadcast TV), with "Superstars."

Glover, did anyone teach you that good journalism begins where ideology ends?

I'll put greater credibility in Glen over the Obama administration?s elitist image, for the following reasons:
1.) Everyone in this country has a right to Free Speech under the Bill of Rights, Article 1. Glen is not excluded.
2.) Glen supports his arguments or statements with relevant historical and current facts or well-founded and supported suspicions, whether one might agree with them or not.
3.) Obama and his administration do not support the "changes" that they wish to impose on our country. They use un-American practices and promotions with irrational economic policies that can lead to total collapse of our economy to force their ideology.
4.) The Administration continually beach the campaign promises of transparency, bipartisan cooperation in developing legislation, not falling to special interest groups, realistic creations of Jobs, etc.
5.) Citizens and critique ARE NOT THE ENEMY! The campaign is over, it would be great if the Administration would do what?s best for the country, not political ambition! This is still ?The land of the free, and the home of the brave??. Lest we forget!!
