Food Safety Bill Passes House

By Katherine Glover | Jul 31, 2009

The Food Safety Enhancement Act survived a house vote, passing 283-142 in a move that earned praise from President Obama, the National Restaurant Association, and the United Fresh Produce Association, among others. The bill would give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to order food recalls, rather than just requesting them. It would also have the FDA do more inspections —...

Wal-Mart Regrets Exec's Comments on Health Care for Immigrants

By Katherine Glover | Jul 30, 2009

Oops. Apparently Wal-Mart is not pleased with something one of its executives said about health care. Wal-Mart recently announced its support for requiring large corporations to provide health insurance to their employees. But a Wal-Mart VP took things one step further last weekend while speaking on a health care panel at the annual conference of Latino group National Council of La Raza. When...

By Katherine Glover | Jul 29, 2009

McDonald's Can Afford To Be Silly

By Ian Ritter | Jul 24, 2009

We are a nation of unnecessary lists. Rolling Stone magazine has its ridiculous 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. People has its Sexiest Men Alive. Fortune tells us the best places to work, though number 14 on its 2006 list, HomeBanc Mortgage, filed for bankruptcy the following year. Now McDonald’s has joined the fray, releasing one of the most ambiguous “best of” lists out...

Now even the Food and Drug Administration has gotten on board, recently voicing its support for the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act. But those in the meat and dairy industry don’t seem to...

Rockstar Exec, Son of Michael Savage, Disavows Homophobia

By Katherine Glover | Jul 22, 2009

It’s amazing how fast reputations can rise and fall, thanks to the Internet. Within the gay and lesbian community, Rockstar Energy Drinks recently went from off the radar to pariah to best friend, all within a couple of months. It started when a guest blogger on the LGBTQ site Bilerico called for a boycott of Rockstar because CEO Russell Weiner is the son of Michael Savage, a far-right...

NYC Gets Emotional About Tim Hortons

By Ian Ritter | Jul 20, 2009

Canadian coffee/doughnut chain Tim Hortons abruptly made its way into New York City recently with franchise operator Riese Restaurants replacing 12 of its former Dunkin’ Donuts stores. The switch was fast, with the stores changing their signage and products over a weekend, right after the Reise announcement. More surprising than the quick changeover, though, are the many reactions New...
