By Matthew Potter | Dec 26, 2008

The U.S. military moves a lot of things around the world. It has invested heavily in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make this easier. Nextgov.com reports that an expanded RFID III contract was awarded to three companies to add to an existing contract with Savi Technology which is a company that is part of Lockheed Martin. Now Northrop Grumman, Unisys and System & Processes Engineering will also provide RFID tags. These newer tags will come in a variety of types with different lifetimes, uses and ranges. They will also perform diverse functions that will allow security applications as well as tracking. The RFID III contract is worth over $400 million.
