Whatever You Think of Syfy, Get Ready for Free, Uh, Wyfy

By Catharine P. Taylor | Jun 22, 2009

In the annals of media property makeovers, I can’t remember any that look as expensive as SCI FI Channel’s changeover to SyFy, which was met with loads of negative online commentary when it was first announced several months ago. I don’t know the dollar figure on the media buys, but I’ve seen the re-brand for months now on the sides of busses, as the front cover ad on various media and advertising trade magazines, on Gawker, and so forth. So much money was spent, in fact, that I now realize that despite my feelings back in March that perhaps the people at SCI FI would reconsider the Syfy name, it probably never would’ve happened; there was too much invested in it, literally.

In fact, Broadcasting and Cable reports that the SyFy rebrand still has a lot of promotional gas in the tank. SyFy (which comes into official use in July), will be underwriting a year of free Wyfy (uh, WiFi), within Union Square and Times Square in Manhattan, as part of its efforts to lift the brand out of strict science fiction and into somewhat broader fare; there’s also “an interactive Imagination Park” slated for outside Rockefeller Center — basically the front yard of parent company NBC Universal, and a sponsorship of an upcoming Tim Burton exhibit at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

As for the renaming controversy, you do have to hand it to SCI FI for playing a strong defense. SCI FI Digital general manager Craig Engler recently told me that the network reached out to bloggers to explain its positioning. It also, per B&C, bought up some URLs it thought might become hubs for complaint, like SyFysucks.com, though it didn’t snap up every possibility. Network chief Dave Howe is using the irate email metric to gauge how ticked off the core Syfy audience actually is. When SCI FI cancelled “Stargate Atlantis”, Howe claims he got 150 angry emails per day. In the four months since the announcement of the Syfy rebrand, he says he has gotten only 20.

  • Landor Distances Itself from the SyFy Name

BNET Media - 238 days 21 hours 5 minutes ago

As you may have noticed, we've been having loads of fun here at BNET Media regarding Sci-Fi Channel's, um, interesting decision to rename itself SyFy. The new name -- which some have compared to a certain sexually-transmitted disease  -- has met with puzzlement, to say the least. As this post at News.com described it: "There has been something...

  • Why Syfy?

    MediaPost - 153 days 22 hours 23 minutes ago

Craig Engler, SVP, General Manager, SCI FI Digital, explained that you have to tackle negative comments or concerns head on. When the Sci Fi channel announced it would change its name to SyFy, it provoked a backlash among fans who he says mistakenly perceived it as the network trying to disassociate itself from geeks. (Don’t

  • SyFy's Dave Howe Discusses New Brand, But Not Wrestling

BNET Media - 249 days 18 hours 18 minutes ago

The Sci Fi Channel's own blog post about its planned name change to SyFy now has almost 1000 (mostly negative) comments and more than 1500 Diggs. But, in case you were wondering if there really was a rationale for what looks to be a reviled name change, I found a video on the Broadcasting & Cable site of Dave Howe, the channel's president,...

  • SyFy Lends Itself Not to Sci-Fi, But Syphilis Jokes

BNET Media - 251 days 19 hours 3 minutes ago

Perhaps you read yesterday in The New York Times that NBC Universal's SciFi Channel is renaming itself SyFy. But that's only the half of it. One day later, the tweeters have spoken, and it's clear more research should have been done before Sci Fi floated the new name. Welcome to the world of rebranding your media company in Web 2.0, and an...

  • We Can't Own 'Sci Fi', So Let's Change Our Name To Something Stupid

    TechDirt - 251 days 23 hours 14 minutes ago

The name of the Sci Fi cable channel is pretty self-explanatory: the channel shows science fiction programs. But it's going to soon have a new name: "Syfy" . It's apparently pronounced the same as Sci Fi, regardless of how it reads, and was chosen because NBC Universal can "own" it , as opposed to the generic Sci Fi name, which the company...
