DTC advertising not earning its keep — … or so says John Mack, at the Pharma Marketing Blog. Mack crunched some numbers and determined that, contrary to conventional wisdom, pharma would profit from the elimination of direct-to-consumer TV ads (i.e., sales generated by DTC ads don’t cover their cost). I feel that cutting back on ads and CEO and other executive bonuses and perks to keep vested employees employed would build morale heighten productivity and possibly innovation and creativity.

Bring the jobs back to the USA!

    Not Assimilated

RE: Pharma Roundup: Glaxo Reorganizing in U.S., Pfizer Urged to Keep Jobs in Connecticut, and More

Pfizer is the Borg of big pharma. The Borg doesn???t invent???it only takes over what belongs to others with the warning ???Assimilate or die.??? Pfizer buys other companies, lays off all the workers of the ???assimilated??? company, and sells all the assets except, of course, the drug patents.

Because Pfizer laid off the majority of its brain trust, it is left with a dwindling pipleline but a heap of cash. Pfizer hasn???t come up with a novel drug on its own in a very long time. The big-name drugs it owns came from those ???assimilations??? (Lipitor, Gabapentin, Viagra, Rogaine, and many others).

The Borg strategy is not working. Pfizer stock is 1/2 its 2000 value. Sure, it???s sitting on $40B cash???that???s a lot of dividends to spread around. But don???t mistake that for actual growth.
