Bayer Turns HQ Into Giant Electronic Billboard

By Jim Edwards | Oct 30, 2009

In a move that wouldn’t look out of place in the film Bladerunner, Bayer (BAY) has covered the entire surface of its former Leverkusen HQ in 5.6 million LED lights to create a semi-permanent lightshow (video below).

The results are spectacular — animated shots of blooming flowers, fireworks, the universe (and, of course, Bayer’s logo) can be seen for miles around.

The project is an ad for Bayer’s MaterialScience division, which makes LEDs.

Bayer is moving to a new HQ, so it appears that the lightshow may come to an end when Bayer gives up its old Leverkusen home.

Jim Edwards, a former managing editor of Adweek, has covered drug marketing at Brandweek for four years, and is a former Knight-Bagehot fellow at Columbia University's business and journalism schools. Follow him on Twitter or send him an email.

Fashion is one of the few arenas in which men have always had significantly fewer choices than women. What to make of Onyx Pharmaceuticals' announcement this morning that it had been unable to peacably resolve a dispute with Nexavar partner Bayer over a fluorinated version of that kidney/liver cancer drug? Most observers we've talked to about it here at BIO suggest that it's one sign the broader partnership is under stress."That can't be good,"...

  • Bag Friday: The perfect netbook sleeve

    ZDNet - 267 days 9 hours 29 minutes ago

It's no secret that I'm a bit of a bag nut. That being said the first accessory that I sought out for my new Mac OS X netbook wasn't an extra battery or a high-capacity SD card (both are practically required, btw) - it was a bag. The mini 9 has a high-gloss black lid that wouldn't be out of place on the surface of a grand piano. It's shiny as a...
