Delta Brings Back Aviation Safety Action Program; American Pilots Chime In

By Brett Snyder | Feb 5, 2009

Delta and its pilots have agreed to bring back the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) that went away a couple years ago. Actually, it appears that the Delta pilots will simply use the program that Northwest has been using. This is great news, and it certainly puts pressure on American and US Airways pilots to bring back their plans as well. Or does it put the pressure on management?

American’s pilots clearly saw that this would make them look bad for walking away from the program, so they decided to put out a release saying that the American Pilots Association (APA) likes this new Delta program. I’m assuming from the looks of the release, if American cut and pasted Delta’s plan and submitted it to the APA for a vote, we’d have an agreement.

If that’s the case, then the ball is now in American’s court.  I would love to see American’s management take them up on their offer here so that we can keep this moving.   But something tells me that this will continue to be held back until management and the pilots improve their relationship.

This is great news. As I had written in PlaneBusiness Banter in December, it did appear that D elta Air Lines and its pilot union were close to coming to an agreement which would see the airline reinstate its Aviation Safety Action Program. This morning the airline announced just that. From the airline's release: " Delta...

More good news today on the airline union front. It was announced this afternoon that the pilots at American have come to terms with the company on a new Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) participation agreement. As readers know, this issue has been a burr in my side. The ASAP program, which encourages pilots to self-report safety...

  • Kudos to Delta for Reinstating ASAP

Aviation Week - 299 days 14 hours 22 minutes ago

I have been quick to criticize those carriers who, in recent months, have withdrawn from or otherwise halted participation in Aviation Safety Action Programs, so I wanted to be just as quick to praise Delta for reinstating its program. Reinstating the program covering pre-merger Delta pilots -- pre-merger Northwest pilots are covered under a...

Aviation Safety Action Programs (ASAP) have been in the news a lot lately ... airlines dropping them as a result of labor negotiations, then organizations like AIA and the FlightSafety Foundation firing back about their importance. Last October, American Airlines allowed its ASAP for pilots to lapse, citing difficulties in contract negotiations...

Merry Christmas, folks! I’ve got some loose ends I want to tie up here before heading off to Memphis for Christmas with my family. Oh, and confidential to all who’ve inquired about this: I did indeed finish, 50,000 words between November 1 and 30. There are actually several scenes involving aviation. (Write what you know, huh?) Now on to the...
